Here’s your first look at the Coen Brothers’ True Grit, the second adaptation of Charles Portis’ 1968 novel—although as you can see, the specter of the 1969 John Wayne film looms fairly large over this as well, with Jeff Bridges’ whiskey-soaked, one-eyed marshal Rooster Cogburn immediately evoking The Duke’s own take on the character, particularly that iconic scene of Cogburn taking his horse’s reins in his mouth so he can blast away with a Colt in both hands. This preview mostly centers on newcomer Hailee Stanfield’s character Mattie Ross who (as in the book) narrates the tale of her teaming up with Cogburn to track down her father’s killer, played by Josh Brolin. Unfortunately, it only offers a few glimpses of Brolin—ditto Matt Damon as a Texas Ranger—but from what we can tell, everyone’s mustaches seem to be in order, and they look great against the backdrop of Roger Deakins’ typically lovely landscapes.
