The Very Best Of The Bob Newhart Show
This box set, similar to the recent Mary Tyler Moore Show collection, gathers 12 episodes of Bob Newhart's '70s TV series—two from each of six seasons. With Newhart playing a psychologist, the show gave him endless opportunities to react to characters more animated than his own, and the first-rate supporting cast didn't hurt things, either. It's a great series, undeniably one of the best, but it's difficult to figure out what the audience for this attractively packaged set will be. The episode selection is generally good, although at least a couple of shows seem to be plucked from larger storylines, and consequently seem out of place. While you can't go wrong with The Bob Newhart Show, it's probably difficult for most people to justify shelling out the money for a few episodes when the whole series is being perpetually rerun on cable—as, it might be argued, God intended.
