The Visitors

The Visitors

In this 1993 French comedy, just out on video, a medieval nobleman (The Professional's Jean Reno) and his peasant toady, Jacquasse (get it?), are transported to modern-day France through some bad wizardry. The jokes are as broad as you might imagine, and when they work—as in scenes of Reno solemnly washing his hands in a toilet—they work well. However, this doesn't happen very often. More typically, modern characters discuss at length and high volume what's to be done with these crazy men from the past, while Jacquasse eats a sandwich—with the plastic wrap still on! Wildly popular in France, The Visitors took some time to reach these shores, and understandably so. Lowbrow physical comedy should be universal, but something here just doesn't translate. When people talk about the false impression Americans have of the quality of French movies, due to the junk we don't get to see, this is what they're talking about.
