The Weinsten Company has pledged to appeal the MPAA’s recent NC-17 rating of Blue Valentine, hoping to convince the board that its dirty, hot, filthy depiction of dispassionate lovemaking between two unhappily married people is crucial to the storyline and worth allowing parent-accompanied minors to see, so that they may look upon it and realize that sometimes monogamy isn’t very pretty, those perverts. The appeal is set for November, where attorneys will plead the film’s case, as well as show comparable scenes from other movies that have received lesser ratings, which sounds like it will be a fun, sexy time for the MPAA. Weinstein, who has used the controversial ratings of films like Kids and Zack And Miri Make A Porno to stir up early publicity for his movies in the past, today issued a statement saying, “We respect the work of the MPAA and we hope, after having a chance to sit down with them, they will see that our appeal is reasonable, and the film, which is an honest and personal portrait of a relationship, would be significantly harmed by such a rating.” As always, you can’t knock the hustle.
