Seeing as its DNA is encoded in nearly every single diverse-men-on-a-mission action flick, both explicitly (The Magnificent Seven) and not-so-explicitly (everything else), it was only a matter of time before someone got around to remaking The Seven Samurai again. Or rather, “Time and Harvey Weinstein,” as the philosophers say, seeing as it’s The Weinstein Company that’s been actively pursuing the project for nearly four years now, and today they’ve reportedly moved closer than ever by hiring British director Scott Mann (The Tournament) to helm their “contempo interpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s classic. Scripted by John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom, Young Guns), the new version will concern seven paramilitary contractors from all around the world who come together to defend a town in Northern Thailand from attack—though Variety doesn’t say from what. But considering it’s a “contemporary” version, probably looser sexual mores.
