The Writers Guild also likes Homeland, Breaking Bad, and Modern Family—but y'know, for writerly reasons

While so much awards-season attention is focused on the glamour of Hollywood stars, nothing would be possible without the imagination and tireless efforts of the humble screenwriter, according to a statement read patronizingly by a Hollywood star who makes 100 times what the screenwriter makes and will never have sex with them. Fortunately, those efforts never go unnoticed at the Writers Guild, who have long banded together to make sure that their contributions to the entertainment industry never go unnoticed, even if it's just by a bunch of writers.

This year's TV nominations include a lot of repeats from prior years—particularly on the Best Drama side, which reads exactly the same as the 2012 nominees minus The Good Wife, a show that found itself shoved out once Mad Men was finally back on the air. Comedy also looks exactly the same, with Girls subbing in for last year's slot reserved for Curb Your Enthusiasm, while both Breaking Bad and Modern Family are once again all over the episodic categories with four and three nominations, respectively. But then, that's what the New Series category is for, and it's here you'll find freshmen like The Mindy Project, Nashville, and Veep—all shows that will face off against The Newsroom's Aaron Sorkin, who doesn't even like the Writers Guild, and doubly so if they don't give the award to him.
