Theory: Maybe Trump’s anti-crime executive order was actually about RoboCop
Yesterday, Donald Trump signed three new executive orders designed to take a hard stance on crime. While they contained very little in the way of substantive new policy, they were couched in what has become his standard postapocalyptic rhetoric about our country’s rising crime rates, which is, itself, a classic Trumpian lie—crime rates have been declining for decades.
The combination of his policy-light executive orders and his fact-free claims of a crime-riddled dystopian hellscape left some shaking their heads. However, Buzzfeed’s Jesse McLaren has a hypothesis that would explain everything:
That’s right: Donald Trump is not even talking about the time-space continuum in which we live, but rather the satirical future of Detroit as featured in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic RoboCop! We’ve somehow merged with that fictional universe. It explains everything, particularly the scourge of teens high on nuke roaming the streets and the fact that Donald fucking Trump is still the president. That certainly wouldn’t happen in the real world, right?
