In perhaps the least necessary sequel-related clarification since Christopher Nolan took pains to explain that Heath Ledger would not be reprising his role in The Dark Knight Rises, Will Forte tells Ain't It Cool News that recent talk of MacGruber 2 may be slightly premature, given that the original was a commercial failure that scored one-third as much as, say, A Night At The Roxbury. Also, politics. But mostly the first thing, as during an interview for That's My Boy, Forte paused from pretending that it's a film he is proud of as a comedian to acknowledge the MacGruber reports by saying, "I don't think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it," instead crediting director Jorma Taccone's declaration that it was in the works to his being "really tired one morning giving an interview, and he said something stupid about it."
Forte did add that they "jokingly talk about the sequel all the time," which prompted his That's My Boy co-star to similarly jokingly offer him $1,000 to make the film right now, because Samberg is about to be swimming in Adam Sandler movie money. Unfortunately, while $1,000 is a decent start, Forte suggests MacGruber 2 could really only happen in "one alternate universe in a series of parallel universes." And if we're going to try breaking through to one of those alternate universes, we should probably be aiming for one where 9/11 never happened and cats can be trusted to house-sit while you're on vacation, not the one with MacGruber 2.
