These first-person daredevil videos are great if you need a panic attack
YouTube daredevil James Kingston recently released a video titled “The craziest thing I’ve ever done!!” In it, he clambers across a crane suspended between two goddamn skyscrapers. At one point, while he is standing on the crane, he goes to climb up on some little basket thing by jumping to it from the crane, at which point the wind inevitably begins to move the crane slightly, a physical reaction you can see happening. It is a panic-inducing video. You will feel like you are on fire while watching it.
But here is the hard truth: It is not the craziest thing this guy has ever done. Here he is hanging off a building with one hand like an asshole:
Here he is climbing the Eiffel Tower late at night:
Here’s some more of that old crane bullshit, this time purportedly “the world’s tallest”:
You know what he should do next? Nothing. He should quit. He should become a dentist. These daredevil feats are not a thing anyone on the planet should be doing, ever. At one point in his new video, he describes his dream of jumping from crane to crane, like James Bond does in Casino Royale. This is a bad idea for a lot of reasons, chief among them that James Bond is not a real person. He is a fictional character known primarily for doing things that people do not do. The things he does should not be emulated by anyone. James Kingston is the reason parents don’t let their kids watch action movies.
There is a whole cottage industry of these maniacs on YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat, climbing up shit and walking on building ledges and hanging off of it and jumping places they shouldn’t, and they are all the worst. Following them is a decision to ratchet up the amount of anxiety you feel while scrolling your various feeds. Do so at your own exorbitant risk.
