They escaped at Dannemora, fa la la la la, la la la la

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, December 23. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Escape At Dannemora (Showtime, 10 p.m.): The last, excellent episode of Escape At Dannemora—and they’ve nearly all been excellent—finally delivered what the show says on the tin, and showed us Matt (Benicio Del Toro) and Sweat (Paul Dano) escaping at Dannemora. But this series being as excellent as it is, the thrill wasn’t limited to all that goes on in director Ben Stiller’s staggering 10-minute tracking shot, which opens the episode. Here’s our own Laura Bogart on “Chapter Five”:

This episode is taut, not only because it stages a prison break (the first one at Clinton Correctional in 86 years, a jubilant Sweat tells Matt), but because it weds the stakes of that escape to the fears and the desires that have driven and dominated these characters for so long.

For a promo with zero dialogue, that’s pretty damn tense, no? Bogart’s ready to once again wade into the turbulent waters of Showtime’s gripping limited series in service of the almighty recap.

Regular coverage

Outlander (Starz, 8 p.m.)
Runaways (Hulu): episodes 8–10

Wild card

Watership Down (Netflix, 3:01 a.m.): Dear Parents Of The World Who Have Not Read Watership Down,

How are you? Having a good December? It’s been crazy here, we’ve written so many lists that none of us can stop ranking things. We thought we could pull it together long enough to reach out about 2018's Top Adaptation Of A Book That Centers On Cute Rabbits. Namely, we wanted to mention this: It isn’t for teeny children. Watership Down, Netflix and BBC One’s adaptation of the Richard Adams novel of the same name, may look kinda cute when you’re just looking at the video still below, but it isn’t. This is a story of bunny brutality. Just watch.

See what we mean? That said, this is a terrific cast, so maybe you’ll want to watch it after the kids go to bed? That suggestion snagged the number five spot on our list of 2018's Top Things To Do When Your Children Are Asleep This December. We’re tired.

Lots of love,
The A.V. Club
