Superheroes will be in plentiful supply in theaters this spring and summer, but at least one movie (okay, two) is poised to thin their ranks a bit. The new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has arrived exactly one week after the latest tease from that other corner of the Marvel comics universe that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We get a glimpse at Apocalypse’s (Oscar Isaac) “better world,” built from the ashes of the neon-lit one that the X-Men—and billions of others—are currently inhabiting sometime in the ’80s, judging by the hair.
Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) has recommitted himself to molding the next generation of mutants, but his efforts might be too little, too late in the face of their latest threat: The aforementioned Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen. He appears surprisingly cocky when Magneto (Michael Fassbender) comes a-callin’ at the School For Gifted Youngsters, though he presumably loses some of that confidence later when he’s being tossed around the room by Apocalypse. And speaking of Magneto, he’s ready to “take everything from them,” meaning humans, probably, so it’s a good thing that Quicksilver (Evan Peters) has quit goofing off and just joined the X-Men already.
