We’ve already seen a few teasers for Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, but this full trailer is the first one that really lays out how its misogynistic nightmare world came to be. The show itself will probably go into more detail, but the message here seems to be that it was surprisingly, horrifyingly easy to turn the United States into a dystopia where women are robbed of all agency and turned into property for the ruling class. Of course, the fact that this show is premiering just a few months into the Donald Trump/Mike Pence/Steve Bannon administration really helps underline how unsettling all of this is, but it would all be pretty spooky even if it wasn’t worryingly close to reality.
The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere on Hulu on April 26.
