Things get trippy in the first Doctor Strange trailer

After months of casting notices, plot speculation, and a lot of aggressively tall collars, it’s finally time to see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in motion. ABC debuted the first trailer for the mystic-minded Marvel master of magic’s movie—set to debut on November 4 of this year—tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, treating fans to a teaser video that suggests that director Scott Derrickson might be ready to unleash the kinds of trippy visuals that would do the character’s co-creator, Steve Ditko, proud.

At first, things look pretty typical, with Benedict Cumberbatch walking his way through some standard origin story beats. But then Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One shows up to Matrix-punch Stephen Strange in the astral body, and stuff gets weird. We get a few looks at Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo, and a glimpse at whatever reality-altering monster Mads Mikkelsen is playing, but it’s really about watching cities bend and twist around the characters, culminating in Strange falling through what looks like a version of New York City that’s been split, doubled, and bent fully 90 degrees.
