This ain’t your granddad’s Drowning Pool concert (unless this guy’s your granddad)
According to the most recent findings, your mama still don’t dance, but your daddy does, in fact, rock ’n’ roll. At least that’s the case with 82-year-old John Hetlinger, who appeared on America’s Got Talent last month to perform a rousing rendition of Drowning Pool’s “Bodies,” the Dallas metal band’s ode to mosh pit mayhem that later became a tool of “enhanced interrogation” used against detainees at Guantanamo Bay. One wouldn’t expect to hear an octogenarian shout-sing so passionately about bodies hitting the floor, but then again, by that age you’ve seen more than your share of untimely collapses.
The AGT judges found the whole thing perplexing, particularly Heidi Klum, who looked downright irritated by the performance. Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who has mellowed considerably since his American Idol days, was tickled by Hetlinger’s elderly rage.
The audience, however, was thrilled, which explains why the clip has racked up over 8 million YouTube views since early June. But more importantly, Consequence Of Sound reports that Drowning Pool has taken to Hetlinger, so much so that the band has invited him to perform “Bodies” with them at this weekend’s Open Air Music Festival in Chicago. Here’s hoping Hetlinger doesn’t collapse on stage, because man, the irony…
