There are many good projects that can be completed over five days. You could completely clean out your garage, or start a garden. You could read a book or two, or make serious headway on starting one. You could beat a game you’d been putting off forever. If you have four friends, some facility with After Effects, and access to an enormous house, you could hit your friends with sticks and shit in an almost shot-for-shot remake of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith.
It’s not the full thing, which clocks in at (ugh) two hours and 20 minutes, but it’s surprisingly comprehensive and maybe a little tighter, using John Williams’ original score with new vocal performances and sound effects. The fight scene against Count Dooku is supplemented with cartoony kung-fu thwacks; since there are only five actors, many roles are played by the same personnel, often with cheap masks over their faces. The opening scrawl says that the fans were high on Rogue One and had a few days left on break, which is the sort of gloriously stupid shit people with long breaks should do.
It’s both affectionate and sardonic, as has been much of the recent critical reevaluation of the prequel trilogy, primarily performed on Reddit. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword: For the people appreciating these prequels, the whole project scans as genuine fandom, while for the many people who revile them, videos like this will only reinforce their arguments.
On the other hand, maybe all the original movie needed was a dabbing Emperor Palpatine to accompany Darth Vader’s climactic transformation scene? George Lucas can always CGI one in, after all.
