This homemade sequel to The Shining is a love letter to the horror genre
Nobody needed a sequel to The Shining, but Stephen King gave us one in 2013 with the underwhelming Doctor Sleep, which pivoted from the ghostly, existential horrors of an isolated hotel to (checks notes) a band of horny carny vampires. Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Hush) is currently adapting it, but if you’re interested in a different kind of sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s masterful 1980 adaptation then check out the above mashup.
Filmmaker Antonio Maria Da Silva is behind the 30-minute film, which, while technically a mashup, actually tells a nifty little story of its own. In it, Jack Torrance lives on inside The Overlook Hotel, where his writings usher in horrors from the breadth of the genre’s oeuvre. Original narration pairs with manipulated clips from not just the original Shining, but also the likes of Psycho, Poltergeist, The Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, The Ring, and many, many more, to create a loving ode to decades worth of horror. Nowhere else will you see Little Shop of Horrors, Rocky Horror, and the goddamned Exorcist smashed together so cleverly.
Da Silva’s fandom manifests in a multitude of forms here, with Torrance not only facing other iterations of Jack Nicholson, but also a rogue’s gallery of Stephen King’s other creations. Pennywise’s red balloon floats through a number of scenes, while Torrance finds himself face to face with everyone from Cujo and Christine to Annie Wilkes and Gage Creed.
