This is the dawning of the age of Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, March 17. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Supergirl (The CW, 8 p.m.): Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) has been a standout on Supergirl since her first appearance in 2016. While there have been some stumbles here and there—we remain unconvinced on the whole Lena and James thing—that character, and McGrath’s portrayal of her, has been a consistent bright spot, even when the show has faltered. That’s especially true when Brenda Young (Desperate Housewives) shows up as the Luthor matriarch; all that Luthor drama gives McGrath, her solid American accent, and that impeccable ponytail plenty to play.
Well, McGrath and the ponytail are about to get a hell of a workout, because Lex is incoming, and he’s played by Duckie from Pretty In Pink.
“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” also marks the return of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, so it’s a family reunion kind of night. Caroline Siede has all her Two And A Half Men jokes ready to go for her recap.
Regular coverage
The Simpsons (Fox, 8 p.m.)
American Gods (Starz, 8 p.m.)
Bob’s Burgers (Fox, 8:30 p.m.)
The Walking Dead (AMC, 9 p.m.)
Billions (Showtime, 9 p.m.): fourth season premiere
Wild card
Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj (Netflix, 3:01 a.m.): This is probably a pretty decent time to watch anything Netflix has got on its roster that you think is pretty special or significant. We’ll never know how many people watch those things—it’s either “four million” or “data not found”—but Patriot Act is good, and we’d be sad if it got cancelled. After that, maybe hop right on over to One Day At A Time (Netflix, already released) and fall in love with the Alvarez family. Then you’ll be all prepared if it winds up on some very smart network that knows that warm, funny, and smart multi-cam sitcoms can make loads of money if you only take the trouble to promote them.
