This mashup generator works better than it has any right to
Vibrant, crowd-pleasing song/genre mashups popularized by the likes of Girl Talk and The Hood Internet haven’t really been in the cultural conversation for about 10 years or so, but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable. And time has only made it easier to merge songs, what with the prevalence of software capable of matching disparate tracks’ tempos.
TheMagiciPod.com revisits those halcyon days of mashup dominance (it even reads ~2007~ in the browser tab) by offering a selection of the last decade’s greatest hits (hip-hop on the left, pop-rock on the right) that you can mix and match. Each song is capable of mashing with roughly five to eight of the opposite columns’ tracks, making this the perfect spot to kill some time and revisit hits you haven’t heard since Yellowcard was topping the charts (“Ocean Avenue” is on here, natch).
Smash Mouth’s “All Star” (no stranger to mashups) and Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” are, unsurprisingly, mashup gold, while The Fray’s earnest “Over My Head” proves to be this site’s most inspired pairing, if only for it being the best weepy pop ballad that nobody wants to admit they like. Pair it with DMX’s “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” and bask in an audial bliss you never thought possible—or at least hadn’t heard since 2007.
