If there’s a weird vacancy in your podcast playlist or you’ve suddenly found yourself spending less time on Reddit lately, it may be due to Serial going on hiatus. Until Sarah Koenig picks another story to unravel and tangle again, addicted listeners will have to get by on backlash articles, insider interviews, and Serial parodies. Fortunately, there’s no lack of the latter.
While many parodies are content to poke fun at Koening’s delivery and cadence, Serial Dating goes farther by turning the podcast against itself. The video edits audio of Koening’s obsessive commentary on Syed, taking it slightly out of context, and pairs it with an effectively low-key performance by Honora Talbott. In doing so, Serial Dating makes a pretty good case that Sarah is, like, totally crushing on Adnan. (Of course, we probably wouldn’t even be having this conversation if Koenig weren’t a woman interviewing a man, but that’s a discussion for another day.)
The convict’s wily aloofness and the host’s earnest inability to stop doting on him (even doting on her own doting) is strangely well-suited to the predictability of a romantic comedy. Before it goes over-the-top at the end, Serial Dating works by putting a fine point on what was equally addictive and frustrating about Koening’s own role in the real Serial podcast.
