This Smash Mouth and Linkin Park mashup works frighteningly well

In light of this summer’s bread-throwing incident, it feels like Smash Mouth’s music could use a little more angst. Enter this mashup of the cheerful, ego-pumping tune “All Star” with the music from Linkin Park’s “In The End,” a song about a broken relationship and how pointless life is now that love is gone. The latter song’s minor chords and brooding sense of fatalism certainly temper Smash Mouth’s enthusiasm: When vocalist Steve Harwell sings lines such as “The years start coming, and they don’t stop coming” and “Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb,” they sound dramatically different when paired with moody piano melodies and turbulent electric guitars. Shrek would certainly shed a tear or two.
