This Star Wars scene works suspiciously well with music from the Star Trek reboot
A million voices suddenly cried out in terror but were decidedly not silenced when it was announced in October 2013 that J.J. Abrams, the man at the helm of the Star Trek reboot franchise, would also be directing and co-writing the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. How could this brazen pop cultural hussy carry on with both Star ___ series at the same time? Had he no loyalty? Had he no shame? At some point, one must choose the phaser or the lightsaber, the Tribbles or the Ewoks, the Enterprise or the Millennium Falcon. This the gods have decreed. But a recent mashup by Ronen V is calling that logic into question. What this resourceful Vimeo user has done is to combine the climactic trench run from 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV with an excerpt from Michael Giacchino’s score from 2009’s Star Trek. “The sync,” says Ronen, “is uncanny.” And a viewing of the clip bears him out, as the tense and dramatic Trek music perfectly adheres to the contours of the crucial Wars scene like a top-of-the-line memory foam mattress. Whether this is an attempt to build a bridge between two long-warring fan communities or a sly act of Internet trolling remains to be seen.
