This trailer for Netflix and the BBC's Watership Down really is disarmingly cute

Look, despite what you may have heard, Watership Down is definitely not a fun adventure story about cute bunnies and their cute bunny friends, but Netflix and the BBC seem to be a little less sure about that—at least if the new trailer for their animated adaptation is anything to go by. There’s some ominous imagery at the beginning, but the early moments of this trailer indicate that this is some kind of lighthearted “secret life of wild creatures” story (complete with rabbit nuzzling and playful rabbit tackling). Also, the look of the rabbits themselves isn’t really helping, as this seems kind of like the lower-tier CG quality you’d see in a show for kids and not a harrowing story about bunny brutality. Compared to the ridiculously dark trailer for the 1978 version, this adaptation seems positively adorable.

Of course, it’s possible that the BBC and Netflix are just trying to lull viewers into a false sense of security so they can be truly shocked when the rabbits start ripping each other apart, but we’ll have to wait until the end of the month to see if that’s the case.
