On the one hand, the ukelele is an overused instrument, and cute ukelele covers of popular songs are a hipster cliché. On the other hand, this ukulele cover of Slayer’s “War Ensemble” retains much of the face-melting delight of the original while adding its own unique charms. It’s just a kinder, gentler melting. Like a really invigorating tan. Sure, creator Rob Scallon might not have Jeff Hanneman’s axe, or his flowing locks, but the YouTube musician pulls off some impressive finger work nonetheless. Just imagine him as really giant man playing a normal-sized guitar. That’s hardcore.
