Thom Yorke hopes to sell you two minutes of silence
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Mark Ronson, actor Bob Hoskins, tennis player Andy Murray, and British Prime Minister David Cameron for a new charity single called “2 Minute Silence”—a rather impressive team, considering the “single” is, as its title suggests, nothing but two minutes of silence. The single is being released on Nov. 7, Britain’s Remembrance Day, to benefit British troops and their families. In a statement, Royal British Legion Director General Chris Simpkins said, “Rather than record a song, we felt the UK public would recognize the poignancy of silence and its clear association with remembrance.” Um, yeah, but you’re still selling two minutes of silence, old chap. Great cause, a meaningful concept, and surely better than another overblown “We Are The World” remake, but as long as you’re trading on people’s respect for Thom Yorke, how about something a little more enticing—“2 Minute Thom Yorke Ordering Lunch,” for example? Anyway, here’s the trailer. Crank it up. [Stereogum]
