3 new Star Wars movies get release dates, along with New Mutants and a bunch of Avatar sequels

The year: 2021. The Avatar sequels that were promised are upon us. There is another Star Wars trilogy. All content belongs to Disney now. You love Disney. You will stream Disney content into your brain until it is riddled with dementia. And you will smile. That’s the forecast for the foreseeable future, anyhow, as Deadline has revealed Disney’s unholy tidal wave of upcoming release dates, including three new Star Wars movies, all of those damn Avatar sequels, some more of those Marvel things, a few live-action remakes, and a bunch of Fox properties—including New Mutants, which has yet another new release date, this time in 2020.

But let’s start with the important stuff: Star Wars! Disney is indeed taking a little hiatus from Star Wars movies (don’t worry, that hot Star Wars streaming content is coming to Disney+ momentarily), but they’ll be back in 2022, releasing a new installment in the next trilogy on pre-Christmas weekend, every other year. It’s unclear if this is the trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson or the one from Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Starting in 2021, Disney will also release a new Avatar from James Cameron’s growing collection of Avatar sequels. Like Star Wars, these will be released on the weekend before Christmas every two years until you are finally, mercifully taken off life support.

Disney’s slate also includes a bunch of recent Fox acquisitions, including New Mutants, the X-Men spinoff from Josh Boone that’s been delayed so many times it’s become a running joke. That film will now finally (allegedly) hit theaters on April 3, 2020. In other superhero releases, there’s a new Marvel movie scheduled for May 2020, which—based on the limited info we have at this point—could be the Black Widow solo movie, or it could be an industrial-sized can of leftover Target-exclusive play sets. You’ll take what you can get and you will like it. Disney’s keeping that live-action train a chug-chug-chugging along with the sequel to Maleficent, now apparently titled Maleficent: The Mistress Of Evil, the live-action Mulan movie, and Cruella—because getting children to sympathize with dog-murderers is a priority in the era of John Wick.
