TIFF’s 2016 lineup features The Magnificent Seven and a young Barack Obama

The Toronto International Film Festival announced a host of films that will be heading to Canada this September, including new offerings from Tom Ford, Denis Villeneuve, and Mira Nair. Kicking things off is Antoine Fuqua’s Denzel Washington- and Chris Pratt-starring remake of the The Magnificent Seven, which will anchor this year’s opening night. The film selection was announced at a press conference earlier today, which you can watch here:

The special presentation lineup will feature the likes of Damien Chazelle’s eagerly anticipated Whiplash follow-up La La Land, Ewan McGregor’s Philip Roth adaptation American Pastoral, young Barack Obama movie Barry, Rachel Weisz’s Holocaust denier drama Denial, and Mascots, which is the latest mockumentary from Christopher Guest. Among the more eyebrow-raising entries: King Of The Dancehall from Nick Cannon—yes, that one—and a film called Catfight starring Anne Heche, Sandra Oh, and Alicia Silverstone. Additionally, you’ll be able to see a lot of Isabelle Huppert, who had multiple films announced. One of those is Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, which debuted at Cannes alongside other TIFF selections like Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden, Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, and Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann. Sundance sensations The Birth Of A Nation from Nate Parker and Manchester By The Sea from Kenneth Lonergan will also be there.

Amy Adams will be all over the festival with two projects: Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and Villeneuve’s Arrival, the latter of which will be a gala. Other galas include Nair’s Queen Of Katwe starring Lupita Nyong’o, Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom with Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, J.A. Bayona’s A Monster Calls, and Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon. Meanwhile, two music documentaries are going to screen: one about Justin Timberlake by Jonathan Demme and another chronicling The Rolling Stones by Paul Dugdale. The whole shebang will come to a close with teen flick The Edge Of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld. TIFF starts September 8 and runs through the 18.
