Timbaland joins ABC’s Boy Band
ABC’s upcoming reality show Boy Band has found its third judge, with Variety reporting that prolific rapper and producer Timbaland has signed on for the competition singing series. He joins a crew of “architects” that also includes Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton and Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, as they work to craft a music group with dance moves, sung harmonies, and “attitude” that could persist through the ages, or at least until its members are old enough to hop onto the musical nostalgia tour circuit.
Although his output has dropped off a bit in recent years, Timbaland remains one of the most successful producers in modern music, working with artists like Jay Z, Drake, Rihanna, and more. That’s to say nothing of his own platinum-selling rap albums, or his long-time collaboration with Carter’s old boy band rival, Justin Timberlake, on hit albums like The 20/20 Experience.
Boy Band—which debuts on June 22— is one of two reality singing competitions debuting on ABC this year, with the revived American Idol as the other. The series will see young would-be stars compete for 18 spots on three different bands, before eventually being winnowed down to just five reality-tested heartthrobs. Singer and actress Rita Ora is set to host.
