Time to celebrate Norman Motherfucking Lear!
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, May 22. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Live In Front Of A Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All In The Family And The Jeffersons (ABC, 8 p.m.): So, the story goes, Jimmy Kimmel had an idea. He called Norman Lear on the phone and said, “Hey, Norman, you old so-and-so”—we’re paraphrasing here—“Norman, you old so-and-so, you know how they’re doing all those newfangled live musicals these days? Why don’t we do an episode apiece from two of your most famous sitcoms live? With movie stars?”
Norman Lear said yes, grabbed his hat, and here we are. Prepare for an episode each of All In The Family and The Jeffersons, starring Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Wanda Sykes, Ellie Kemper, Will Ferrell, Ike Barinholtz, Sean Hayes, Amber Stevens West, Jovan Adepo, Anthony Anderson, Kerry Washington, and Jackée Harry—plus two standouts from the hopefully (hopefully) not yet dead revival of Lear’s One Day At A Time, Justina Machado and Stephen Toblowsky. Noel Murray will cover the proceedings from a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Regular coverage
Jane The Virgin (The CW, 9 p.m.)
What We Do In The Shadows (FX, 10 p.m.)
Fleabag (Amazon, ongoing): Season two finale
Wild card
Whiskey Cavalier (ABC, 10 p.m.): first season finale Odds are better than good that this season finale might actually be the series finale; there’s a chance that this charmer might be picked up elsewhere, but no word so far. Scott Foley has a request:
Anyway, if you like puns and quips and spies and stuff, give it a look.
