Al Swearingen’s had his surprisingly decorous say, and now it’s Seth Bullock’s turn to chime in on the Deadwood movie that’s moving slower than molasses to preproduction.
Timothy Olyphant played Bullock opposite Ian McShane’s Swearingen for three seasons of David Milch’s acclaimed drama, so he’s fielded plenty of questions about the revival movie that Garret Dillahunt has tried to will into development. While on Watch What Happens Live!, the Santa Clarita Diet star was once again asked about reuniting with the cast for the TV movie, which HBO reportedly green-lit more than two years ago. His Netflix co-star Drew Barrymore seems much more confident about it than Olyphant, who initially told host Andy Cohen that the network and Milch are “making an effort. They are making an effort, and I’m hopeful.”
The actor’s expression looked less than optimistic, though, as he continued, “I mean I’m … I’m… I’m a huge fan of David Milch. The man means the world to me. It’s one of the most amazing creative experiences I’ve ever been able to be apart of, and I’d love to be—you know when you do these things you really miss the people. It would just be a lovely excuse to get all those people back together.” But then, as he reached for a glass of wine, Olyphant channeled the series’ profanity: “That being said, there’s no fucking way it’s ever going to happen.”
The host and guests then talked about scheduling issues, with Olyphant saying that he promises to “do [his] part.” Things got a bit more confusing when the actor said that he believes the movie is “closer to being a reality than it’s ever been,” presumably because the interval between the most recent updates was only four months instead of two years, which is heartening progress indeed.
