Tina Fey is developing a witch comedy that isn’t Hocus Pocus 2, so settle down
The Internet erupted today with reports that Tina Fey is developing a sequel to Disney’s Hocus Pocus—a story that was a perfect storm of the web’s love of ’90s nostalgia, all things Tina Fey, and believing shit just because they want to. As it turns out, however, Tina Fey is not using her estimable industry clout to put her name on the long-rumored sequel to the critically derided movie where Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker play witches, which you fell in love with at a slumber party. Variety quotes a rep for Fey that flatly denies the original article from The Tracking Board, stating simply, “Their report is not accurate—Tina is not developing a sequel to Hocus Pocus.” Let this be a lesson to us all about believing such rumors, at least for approximately 24 hours.
However, Deadline reports that Fey is in early development on another witch-themed project at Disney, one that you may soon fall in love with at another slumber party, of the sort you should really stop attending, because you are an adult. But this one is a different, original concept involving witches, described as “in the vein of Ghostbusters,” and with Fey attached to star (presumably as part of a team of witch investigators, who run into witch-ridden hotels and scream, “Hey, witches! Get lost!”). Still, given the online freak-out whenever the possibility of Hocus Pocus 2 is so much as mentioned, who knows, Fey may end up being indirectly responsible for it in due time.
