Tina Fey is done explaining her jokes to the internet

Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was widely regarded as an aggressively delightful show, but one storyline in particular stuck out to a lot of viewers as being a bit rough. It was—as much as some people may hate the word—problematic. Basically, one episode revealed in a flashback that Jane Krakowski’s character is actually a Native American, and she changed her appearance to look white in hopes of being more successful. It was presumably intended to be more absurdist than racist, but it definitely whipped up a bit of controversy among internet people.

Kimmy Schmidt co-creator Tina Fey is done with you internet people, though. In an interview with Net-A-Porter, she offered this bit of advice: “Steer clear of the internet and you’ll live forever.” This was under a section labeled “If You Don’t Get The Joke, That’s Your Problem,” and Fey went on to explain that the internet “was in a whirlwind” over that aforementioned Kimmy Schmidt episode, so her “new goal” is to stop explaining jokes. “I feel like we put so much effort into writing and crafting everything,” Fey says, “they need to speak for themselves.” She concludes by saying, “there’s a real culture of demanding apologies, and I’m opting out of that.” In other words, if you got offended by the joke, that’s your problem.
