Colin Firth had barely finished swaddling your lady’s ovaries in Victorian lace last night when Universal rushed to pick up his next all-but-guaranteed Oscar import: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, an adaptation of the classic 1974 John le Carré novel, is now primed for its American debut next November or December, just in time for next year’s interminable awards season talk. Tomas Alfredson (Let The Right One In) is directing from a script by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), and Gary Oldman stars as le Carré’s favorite spy George Smiley, who’s pulled out of retirement to find a Soviet mole in his former organization. Firth co-stars in a cast that also includes a fluffy-haired, heavily tattooed Tom Hardy, and provided no one does any Boris Badenov accents or anything, we’re guessing this is already being slotted on the Oscars 2012 ballot.
