TNT and TBS team up to renew Animal Kingdom, Wrecked, and Angie Tribeca
TNT and TBS may both operate under the auspices of the Turner/Time Warner media company, but each basic cable network has its own niche. TNT “knows drama,” even if it isn’t espousing that slogan much anymore, while TBS continues to champion the “very funny.” And so, as befits co-owned networks with markedly different content, TNT and TBS are sharing the renewal spotlight this afternoon, announcing three pickups between them.
TNT has given a 10-episode second season to John Wells’ Animal Kingdom, which stars Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman as adopted family members who, by the way, like to knock over jewelry stores. The drama, which is adapted from the 2010 film of the same name, has been going gangbusters in the ratings, increasing viewership with each episode. The network notes that Animal Kingdom’s audience is “evenly gender-balanced,” presumably because hot surfers appeal to everyone. The show also has “the youngest profile of any current TNT drama,” which is hardly surprising when you consider that the other programs in the schedule include Major Crimes and Rizzoli & Isles.
For its part, TBS has renewed Wrecked and Angie Tribeca for a second and third season, respectively. Wrecked has moved beyond just being a Lost parody, and now ranks in the top 25 scripted series on cable, and is also “the #1 new cable comedy based on Live + 7 delivery of adults 18-49.” We’re not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds impressive, especially when paired with the news that the comedy just saw its biggest ratings last night. We guess Rhys Darby trying desperately to crack coconuts is a bigger draw than originally anticipated.
Angie Tribeca boasts some great figures, too (no, we’re not talking about Jere Burns). The Rashida Jones-led comedy, from Steve and Nancy Carell, currently garners nearly 3 million viewers across TBS’ platforms, and has also “added more new viewers in the demo [adults 18-49] than any other returning comedy.” The show will get a 10-episode season (and maybe even a marathon premiere?) in early 2017.
