Today in A.V. Club self-promotion: C2E2, the Wisconsin Film Festival, and the Webbies
The A.V. Club: We're all over the place this weekend. Specifically, attendees at Chicago's inaugural C2E2—short for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo—will have a chance to see The A.V. Club's own Scott Tobias and Tasha Robinson head a panel on Saturday morning. What kind of panel? Glad you asked:
American superheroes have evolved considerably since the days of Action Comics #1. Yes, supervillains and local criminals are still a problem, but so are 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq, classist and racist oppression, corporate chicanery, electoral cycles, economic downturns, and much more. In this panel, two writers from The A.V. Club talk about how superheroes' roles have changed over the decades, and what they look like today.
That's Saturday at 11:15 at McCormick place. Or show up a night earlier to see Tasha moderate the "Monster Mash-Up Mayhem" panel, featuring the authors behind Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, Sense And Sensibility And Sea Monsters, Dawn Of The Dreadfuls, and more. That's at 8 p.m. this Friday night, also at McCormick.
Item 2: Keith Phipps—that's me—will be introducing various movies throughout the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison, WI. That kicks off tomorrow night and runs through Sunday. What will I be introducing? I'm not yet entirely sure, but if you see me, say hello. It's a terrific festival now in its 11th year. This year's highlights include a Bong Joon-Ho retrospective and a revival of Sergio Leone's great Duck, You Sucker (a.k.a. A Fistful Of Dynamite.)
Finally, The A.V. Club's film coverage has been named as an honoree by the Webby awards, alongside The Sundance Channel, Tribeca Film, and Land Of The Lost: Official Movie Site. Yeah, we don't quite understand the category either. But it's an honor to be honored.
