Today in depressing remake news: Live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot gets writer

If you’re roughly the same age as myself the theme song to Teenaged Ninja Turtles occupies prime real estate in the part of your brain that should be devoted to learning new languages or figuring out what exactly the subprime mortgage crisis was all about.

In 2007 the world’s most fearsome fighting team returned to the screen in a CGI adaptation that apparently grossed almost a hundred million dollars. Ah, but the masses demanded more. More! Now the heroes in a half-shell (turtle power!) are hitting the big-screen again in a live-action 2011 reboot written by John Fusco.

Who exactly is this Fusco? And what has he done to prove himself worthy of such an auspicious assignment? He’s apparently a longtime martial artist (i.e middle age dork who runs around making silly kung-fu noises while wearing white pajamas) whose credits include The Forbidden Kingdom, Hidalgo and Young Guns.

It’s unknown whether Fusco’s script will retain some of the grit of the original comic books or follow the more family-friendly live-action films of the nineties. It’s safe to assume, however, that Vanilla Ice will not be asked to reprise his deathless “Ninja Rap” from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze.

Cowabunga?
