Today in fairy-related movie news: George Lucas working on CGI movie musical, Tim Burton to head up Cannes jury

The Heat Vision blog is reporting that George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch has begun development of an animated musical directed by Kevin Monroe, the man behind the well-intentioned but lackluster TMNT. The only salient detail thus far known about the film is that it involves fairies. Elf scribe David Berenbaum, whose experience with things fae also includes The Spiderwick Chronicles, is handling screenwriting duties. It is unclear what involvement, if any, Lucas may have with the project. Lucas is currently preparing for the upcoming release of Red Tails, his take on the Tuskegee Airmen featuring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard.
Meanwhile in equally unexpected news, the Cannes Film Festival has announced that it has appointed master of the whimsical and macabre Tim Burton to head up the jury for this year’s festival. Festival president Gilles Jacob’s statement on the appointment said, “[Burton] is a magician of visual delights who turns the screen into a faerie wonder. … We hope his sweet madness and gothic humor will pervade the Croisette” after noting that this will be “the first time an artist whose origins are in animation will preside over the jury of the Festival de Cannes.” Burton has responded by stating that he is honored, and that “as films have always been like dreams to me, this is a dream come true.”
