Today in music videos: The Pop Group's Mark Stewart teams up with Primal Scream for "Autonomia"
As lead singer of British post-punk band The Pop Group, Mark Stewart experimented with a variety of musical forms, exploring jazz, reggae, and funk sounds, in the service of putting across highly politicized songs. Stewart's M.O. remains the same on The Politics Of Envy, his new solo album due out March 26 from Future Noise Music. The album includes guest spots from a bevy of punk-era stars, including PiL guitarist Keith Levene, Richard Hell, and Lee "Scratch" Perry, as well as Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie, who appears on the album's first single, "Autonomia." The song (officially credited to Mark Stewart vs. Primal Scream) is about Carlo Guiliani, an anti-globalist activist who was killed by police during the G8 summit protests in Genoa in 2001. Gillespie also appears in the video, which was directed by Jesus & Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart. Check out the exclusive premiere below.
