Today in this-isn’t-a-dream: Kevin Costner asked Princess Diana to be in Bodyguard 2
Kevin Costner is currently promoting his new History Channel miniseries, Hatfields & McCoys, but he can’t seem to stop spilling details about his glory days in the ’90s. In an upcoming interview with Anderson Cooper, Costner talks about his interactions with Whitney Houston during the massive box-office hit The Bodyguard, and how he wrote letters to her in support of her struggles with addiction. Costner also responded to long-rumored information about the potential Bodyguard 2 in the mid-’90s. During development, he talked to Princess Diana—yes, that Princess Diana—about co-starring, and says she was interested. Costner even reels off the stunning quote “I told her I would take care of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney,” though admittedly the interview isn’t yet publicly available, so we’re getting that thought out of context. For those keeping score at home, we suppose this belatedly makes Costner 0-for-2 on taking care of people entirely out of his control.
This same news originally surfaced after Princess Di’s death in 1997, but British newspapers like The Guardian and The Telegraph have picked up the story again, in light of the Bodyguard sequel reviving in development, and Houston’s recent death. The full interview, which presumably will cover more than The Bodyguard era in Costner’s career, will air on CNN in May.
