Today in trailer happy hour: Oscar Isaac and Nick Kroll hunt Nazis while Amy Adams has a dark homecoming
Welcome back to Trailer Happy Hour, where you take the good, you take the bad, you take the day’s various TV and film teasers, and there you have ’em: The facts of life. Today we’ve got cars that are cities, bank robbers who are gentlemen, and whatever the fuck this new Amber Heard movie is, so let’s dive in.
First up: Operation Finale, Chris Weitz’s examination of Israel’s attempts to capture and prosecute escaped Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. The film stars Oscar Isaac as famed Mossad agent Peter Malkin, who puts together a team that includes Mélanie Laurent and, in a rare dramatic turn, comic actor Nick Kroll, in order to bring Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) to Israeli justice. Weitz’s film is set for a fall release.
Next up: The latest YA lit adaptation, The Mortal Engines, about a world in which cities drive around on tank treads, gobbling up other, smaller cities. Starring Hera Hilmar and Robert Sheehan as a pair of teen rebels being hunted by a Hugo-Weaving-played bad guy, the trailer stands out for two reasons. One is its pedigree, boasting a script from Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh, who all wrote Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings movies together, and for its visuals, which combine an eye-catching color palette with the admittedly creative “cities-as-cars” conceit.
On a slower note, we also have a trailer for The Old Man And The Gun, an altogether more genteel sort of thriller. Starring Sissy Spacek and Robert Redford—reportedly in his final role—the mostly-true story centers on one of those movie-friendly bank robbers who never swears or hurts people, instead earning the bemused smiles and grudging respect of everybody he robs.
Switching to TV, we’ve also got the long-anticipated arrival of Sharp Objects, the Amy Adams-starring HBO adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s 2006 debut. Dark and moody, the trailer sees Adams’ journalist return to her small home town, ostensibly to investigate a murder, but mostly, it seems, to come to terms with her own past. The series debuts July 8.
And finally, for a little added dose of WTF, we’ve got the trailer for Amber Heard’s London Fields, which is very careful to let you know—complete with a loving leer at her boobs—that Heard’s character’s name is Nicola “Six,” not “Sex.” Directed by Matthew Cullen—best known for his chest-focused work on music videos like Katy Perry’s “California Girls” and “Dark Horse”—the Martin Amis adaptation sees a wide variety of dumb mooks (Billy Bob Thornton, Theo James, Jim Sturgess) fall for Nicola’s femme fatale charms. (But hey, at least the trailer cuts out any mention of Heard’s ex-husband, Johnny Depp, whose previously reported cameo in the film was presumably cut after their divorce and the abuse allegations that followed.)
