13 Going On 30—the Big rip-off that’s an enduring reminder of Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo’s collective appeal—is being turned into a Broadway musical, according to Deadline. The site reports that the movie’s screenwriters, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, are tackling the book, while the songs are being written by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner of First Date, which starred Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez and was tepidly received. The rom-com already has a showstopper built in, thanks to the protagonist’s enthusiasm for “Thriller;” presumably, Zachary and Weiner are cooking up some ’80s-esque number to bring down the house/avoid dealing with the Michael Jackson estate.
In the film, Garner plays teenager Jenna Rink, who, thanks to a wish and some magic, jumps ahead in time. She realizes she’s become a not-very-nice adult, who is still friends with her former tormenter (Judy Greer, perfect). Her old pal-turned-dreamboat Matt Flamhaff (Mark Ruffalo) helps her discover what she really values. Deadline has no details regarding casting for the show nor when it might hit the stage. It does, however, note that the songwriting team is also working on music for an adaptation of the similarly-themed 17 Again. Thankfully, a Big musical has already been done.
