Wonderstruck, a rare all-ages outing for Carol and I’m Not There director Todd Haynes, was a hit at this year’s Cannes, with our own A.A. Dowd calling it “a spectacular technical achievement.” The film’s latest trailer shows off some of that technical pizzazz, with Haynes dashing back and forth between New York in the 1920s and the 1970s at the behest of author Brian Selznick (who also penned the source material for Martin Scorsese’s 2012 Oscar-winner Hugo.)
Starring Oakes Fegley (from Pete’s Dragon) and Millicent Simmonds as a pair of kids equally enthralled by the American Museum of Natural History in two different eras (with just a hint of Julianne Moore around the edges), the trailer is more about emotions and impressions that actual plot. Still, we do get plenty of shots of the movie’s lush color palette, with the black-and-white sequences set in the ’20s contrasting boldly with Fegley’s segments set in 1977.
Wonderstruck arrives in theaters on October 20.
