Todd Haynes is making a documentary about the Velvet Underground
Fresh from the fancy-pants confines of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Carol and Velvet Goldmine director Todd Haynes has announced that he’s working on his first documentary, about the Velvet Underground, according to Variety. As one might expect from the director of the kaleidoscopic Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, Haynes says he’ll “rely certainly on Warhol films, but also a rich culture of experimental film” for the project. Given that many of the key players in the Warhol Factory scene that birthed the Velvets and members of the band itself—including Lou Reed, Nico, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and first drummer Angus MacLise—have died, the talking-head interview options for a documentary would be limited, anyway.
