Tom Cruise banned by Bundeswehr
In the latest Germany-bans-stuff news, AP reports that the German military has barred filming on its bases of the upcoming WWII thriller Valkyrie. The reason? The film's star and co-producer Tom Cruise is the world's most famous Scientologist–and Scientology has been officially labeled a cult and a scam by the German government. Cruise is set to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an opponent of Hitler's antisemitism who attempted to assassinate the dictator in 1944. "In general, the Bundeswehr has a special interest in the serious and authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944 and Stauffenberg's person," commented Defense Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer.
It was not made clear how Cruise's beliefs might impair his ability to accurately play the role–after all, he's a man who clearly knows his shit when it comes to the Nazis.
