Tom Cruise may also do his Tom Cruise thing for The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

After years of attempts from director Steven Soderbergh to make The Man From U.N.C.L.E. more than just another big-screen adaptation of an old TV show or Mission: Impossible clone, Tom Cruise is now reportedly eyeing a starring role, so that’s over. Deadline reports that Cruise is in early talks to join the movie that recently passed to Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie, ensuring that whatever strange idiosyncrasies Soderbergh had planned for the ’60s spy tale will be effectively scrubbed, in favor of Cruise once more doing his unflappable action-hero act in front of Ritchie’s equally studiedly cool camera trickery. As Deadline notes, it would also give Cruise “another shot at a franchise” alongside Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher, with each being distinguished by the clothes Cruise’s character wears, basically. In this case, the tagline for Man From U.N.C.L.E. would read, “Tom Cruise… in a suit.”
