Tom Cruise says the Top Gun sequel will be named after his character

Tom Cruise is continuing to use his press tour for The Mummy to talk about the sequel to Top Gun that’s apparently actually happening. His latest bid to reignite interest came during an interview with Access Hollywood, where he explained that the follow-up, which may be directed by Joseph Kosinski, will not be called Top Gun 2, but rather Top Gun: Maverick, invoking the name of his character. “I didn’t want a number, do you know what I mean?” he said.

Elsewhere, Cruise insisted that, despite the subtitle and the years that have passed, Top Gun: Maverick will have a lot in common with the 1986 original, including a score from Harold Faltermeyer. “It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one,” he elaborated. “And it’s going to be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick. He also promised “aircraft carriers” and “jets,” but would not comment on whether drones would be present. Cruise also failed to mention whether Kenny Loggins would be involved in any way.
