Since the turn the of the century, Tom Cruise has popped up periodically to remind everyone that he’s still Tom Cruise and still a bona fide movie star, despite what the laws of aging and Scientology affiliation normally dictate. Now 53 years old and fresh off a fifth, well-received Mission Impossible, it looks like Cruise is preparing to build off of the similarly acclaimed Edge Of Tomorrow by re-teaming with director Doug Liman. According to Variety, Cruise is on board to develop Liman’s long-brewing Luna Park, and might slide into the lead role depending on the script.
The film, a passion project of Liman’s, centers on “a group of renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source.” Paramount apparently greenlit it in 2011 with names like Chris Evans (34) and Andrew Garfield (32) floating around as potential leads. Then financier Skydance dropped out due to a ballooning budget, and things went dormant until Cruise presumably pointed out to Liman that not only is he quite wealthy, but also he’s been 32-34 years old for two decades now.
It’s unclear if Skydance and Paramount will still be affiliated with the project, or if Cruise really will end up playing the lead if it moves forward. If he does, the video tutorial explaining how to become Tom Cruise will probably see thousands of extra hits, and the Edge Of Tomorrow supercut of him dying over and over might see millions.
