It’s easy to laugh when Blink-182 alum Tom DeLonge says he wants his alien research company—To The Stars Academy, which counts a former Pentagon official among its ranks—to become a “science fiction Disney,” one “where our entertainment franchises are worlds that are inspired and informed by our own next-generation science division.” But the pop-punk luminary is moving and shaking, pairing his space-age experiments with a a slew of books, a sci-fi series on TBS, and a six-part History Channel documentary. Wait, you might be asking, doesn’t this guy sing songs about dicks? Yes. Yes, he does, and now, with his other endeavors sorted, he’s pumping out some power chords yet again.
Not with Blink, mind you, who replaced DeLonge with Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba, but with Angels & Airwaves, the spin-off act that served as a testing ground of sorts for DeLonge’s multimedia goals. The band released five LPs during its run, with 2014's The Dream Walker arriving with a graphic novel, comic books, and a short film. Now, DeLonge is getting the boys back together for a new album and tour, which he’s teasing with the poppy, New Wave-inspired single “Rebel Girl.”
“Rebel Girl is a space-age love song that combines my enduring obsession for New Wave, pop punk and anthemic rock and roll music,” says DeLonge in a press release. “As some of you might’ve heard, I recently took a brief minute to start up an aerospace company, so you never know – I may play this song from a satellite deep in space, beamed toward everyone’s house viciously on repeat.”
The tour, the band’s first since 2012, kicks off in September in Phoenix, which has an extraterrestrial history all its own. Don’t be surprised if the band’s set ends with DeLonge being beamed up by a cone of brilliant white light.
