Tom Hanks and Tom Tykwer are adapting a Dave Eggers novel next

A shared affinity for allegorical fiction about man’s place in the universe and being called “Tom” will reunite Tom Hanks and his Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer, who are next tackling Dave Eggers’ A Hologram For The King. Deadline reports that Tykwer has already written the screenplay—no doubt grateful to have a story that all takes place in one linear timeline for once—and will direct Hanks in the lead role. There, Hanks will draw on all of his sad-eyed, sympathetic every-Hanks powers to play a floundering businessman ravaged by the American recession and adrift in Saudi Arabia, pinning all hopes for his and his broken family’s future on a meeting with the country’s elusive monarch—one that, yes, involves a hologram. As in Cloud Atlas, presumably Tom Hanks will don makeup and prosthetics to also play everyone in Saudi Arabia.
