Tom Hanks latest cinematic collaboration with Dave Eggers, The Circle, has debuted its first trailer, which is full of the glossy exteriors and mounting sense of dread that make up most sci-fi dramas. Hanks plays Bailey, a Steve Jobs-like figure at The Circle, a tech company he runs with two other “Wise Men.” Emma Watson stars as Mae Holland, a new recruit on a meteoric rise at the company—sorry, the Circle. Mae eventually realizes that her life is not what it seems, even though she’s doggedly documenting it along with her co-workers. Mae doesn’t know if the mysterious Kalden (John Boyega) will help or hinder her in a search for the truth, but Bailey’s obviously more diabolical than he appears. At least, that’s the impression we got from his lines about “perfecting human beings” and “knowing everything.”
The Circle also stars Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, and Bill Paxton. It rolls into theaters April 28, 2017.
