Tom Hooper is directing a movie version of Cats

According to Variety, the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats is finally being made into a movie. Les Miserables, The Danish Girl, and The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper is on board to direct and produce, suggesting that Universal and Working Title—the studios behind the project—are hoping it’ll be as prestigious as those other projects turned out to be. No other details about Hooper’s adaptation are available at this point, but a rumor from The Sun back in February suggested that he’s hoping to cast Insurgent’s Suki Waterhouse as one of the stars.

The original Cats musical is based on the T.S. Eliot poetry collection Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats, and it centers around a cat tribe called The Jellicles. The rest of the plot is pretty weird, at least for people who haven’t been adequately exposed to the world of musical theater, so we’ll just leave it at that and assume that anyone who really cares about the plot of Cats is already familiar with it.
